But with so much choice out there nowadays, it can be difficult to settle on just the right gas fire for your needs… so here’s our quick guide on what to look for.

1. The Type of Gas Fire

There are basically four different types of gas fire. You can get one that is inset into the wall, one that stands out, wall mounted varieties and stand-alone stove type heaters. Each of these has its own pros and cons and much will depend on what sort of home you have.

A wall mounted gas fire is more suited to modern homes, for example, while inset varieties can fit neatly into traditional old fireplaces. A stand-alone stove may look really great but can also dominate space if you have a relatively small living room. There are a lot of things to consider.

2. Your Chimney/Flue

It’s important to consider the chimney area or flue where you are having your gas fire installed. The kind of brick chimney that you find in older houses is suitable for most installations. A newer building may not have a chimney area at all and a fire will need to be installed against an outside wall. Another option is to go for a flueless fire.

3. What Are the Measurements?

Before you buy a fire at all, you need to be sure it’s going to fit in the area you have. Particularly if you are fitting into an existing old fireplace, you’ll want it to fit snuggly enough. This is often the thing that people get wrong which is why it’s always best to get someone professional to look over your space before you finally commit.

4. Heat Output and Fuel Efficiency

One thing we’re all more concerned about nowadays is fuel efficiency. While gas is still one of the cheapest fuels in the UK, that doesn’t mean you can’t keep those utility bills under even greater control.

Most new gas fires are very good and can achieve fantastic fuel efficiency compared to much lower values for older devices. The other factor you need to consider is the heat output and this will largely depend on the size of your room and where the heater is going to be located. The average heat output is usually between 3 and 5 kW but you may need more for a larger living room.

5. Which Supplier and Appliance to Choose

With so much choice out there, picking a gas fire that not only looks good but does the job properly is difficult. That’s why you should always opt for a supplier who can provide a wide range of fires and knows what they are talking about.

At Simon Turner Gas we have over 35 years’ experience installing gas fires and we offer a diverse range of products from some of the best manufacturers in the world. We’ll be able to advise on what system best suits your space and ensure that it is installed correctly and safely once you have chosen.
