4 Things To Check On Your House Before Autumn Arrives

1. Check your boiler.

As the steady heartbeat of your home over the cooler months of the year, your boiler is the vital appliance that keeps your heaters warm and your water hot. If you’ve resisted the temptation to have your heating on over summer then choose a day or night when it will be cooler than normal, and fire it up.

We recommend that you have a gas boiler service annually, to keep it working well, efficiently, and critically to keep you safe – or if you know you need to replace your boiler with a new and more efficient one…. then this is the perfect time of year to book us in!

2. Check your heaters.

If your boiler is working well then it should be sending piping hot water around your heating system. If your heaters have been off for much of summer however then they may have developed air pockets which can interrupt the flow of water both in a single heater and around the house. Test your heaters by turning them on, turning up the thermostat and check each one for cold spots and any unusual sounds(!).

3. Check your fire / wood burner, chimney & flues.

If you have a gas fire, as with your boiler and central heating, checking it is working well, efficiently and safely is really important. You will also want to check that the fire’s flue is clear. Give it a test run to check it is operational. If you burn solid fuels such as wood and coal either in an open fire or a wood burning stove you need to check your chimney.

Hetas recommend you service your stove and sweep your flue once a year. You can visually inspect the flue and wood burning stove looking for a splits or cracks, but the best thing to do is to get it cleaned and checked professionally by us.

4. Check your home’s basics.

Your roof, windows and doors should all be checked to make sure you don’t have any tiles missing, and that the seals around your windows and doors are in place and not degraded. Checking for draughts on a windy day will tell you how ready your house is for those really wintery days.
